If you are looking for Northern Indian style chane ka saag then probably you have landed at a wrong place. This is actually Bengali style chane ka saag (Chholar shak) dish. It is very popular in West Bengal & Bangladesh. This chickpea greens stir fry is very popular in this region. As this leafy vegetable is grown during winter season so you mostly find this vegetable from December to February in your local market in India.
Unlike Northern Indian states, most people prefer this Bengali style chane ka saag with rice only. But if you grind those leaves to make paste and then make Northern Indian style chane ka saag then it becomes more enjoyable with roti, paratha or naan.
But I prefer chickpea greens to make in Bengali style and enjoy with warm rice during winter. It is a very healthy dish and Bengali people often prepare this leafy vegetable during this season only.

You just need 3-4 containers to grow this vegetable and consume 2-3 months during the winter season. You do not need to buy seeds from a nursery or shop for this purpose because you definitely have brown chickpea at your home. Whole chickpea seeds are consumed as lentils in India. So it is a common item in every Indian kitchen inventory. I hope you will definitely agree.
Those plants will take hardly 2 months to be ready for harvesting. So you can sow those seeds after Dashera (or even Diwali) and can harvest those in December & January. Growing your own organic leafy vegetables is really a joyful activity.
Okay, now coming to this Bengali style chickpea greens stir fry (Chholar shak). You just need a few ingredients to make this dish.
I love to eat it with hyacinth beans (sheem) & potato. It does not need so many ingredients too.
Chane ka saag recipe
- 150 gm chickpea greens (Chane ka saag)
- 2-3 hyacinth beans (shim)
- 1 small size potato (cut into long & thin pieces)
- 1 green chilli
- 1 tablespoon any vegetable oil
- Salt as needed
- Clean & wash chickpea greens and then cut into small pieces
- Now heat oil in a kadai (cooking pot) and add small pieces of green chilli & saute
- Then add potato & hyacinth pieces and fry till next 3 minutes
- Add chickpea greens, sprinkle pinches of salt and cook for 3 minutes
- Serve this chane ka saag with warm rice
