Various atta in English; Atta meaning in English

If you love cooking food dishes then you know what is atta. There are a lot of types of Indian flatbread which are prepared by various types of atta. Those are roti, naan, paratha, poori, luchi, thelpa, miss roti etc. Apart from those, there are so many other delicious which is prepared with various types of atta. Bafla, litti, bati, idli, pithe, dhokla, khakra – all of these are prepared by different types of atta. Now, what is atta in English? Do you know the atta meaning in English? Many of you definitely know. But many people know some common types of atta what people use very often. There are some specific types of atta that people use to make a few special types of food. Whereas there are a few types of atta those are popular only in some parts of the country.

Atta meaning in English?

Atta means flour in English.

What is atta?

Atta is nothing but the powder form of various grains, lentils, roots, nuts, seeds etc. Wheat flour, cornflour and rice flour are the most popular types of flour that are used to make various types of bread, Indian flatbreads, other delicious dishes.

Traditionally simple mortar & pestle were used to grind grains, lentils, roots, seeds etc to make flour. Then gradually many hand-driven advanced tools were introduced. Those tools make the grinding tasks simple. Nowadays various advanced electric tools are available.

Tapioca roots are also ground to make flour. Various types of lentils (chickpeas, peas, moong etc) are ground to make flour too. Those are used to make various mouthwatering dishes.

Gehun ka atta in English – Wheat flour

Wheat flour is a popular flour across the world. The majority number of people in the world use it every day to make their meal. It is nothing but the powder form of wheat grain. It has various grades based on the availability of gluten in the flour. If more gluten is in the flour then it will be harder. The colour of the flour is also a factor for wheat flour gradation. It depends upon the specific part (endosperm, germ and bran) of the grains are used to make the flour. All-purpose flour (maida ka atta in English) is a white colour wheat flour. It is also known as refined wheat flour. Wheat flour is used to make litti, bafla, bati, roti, naan, paratha, kulcha, bhatura, pancakes, cakes, pastry, bread etc. So you can understand that it is a very essential flour for every household as well as the restaurant.

Besan ka atta in English – Gram flour

Besan is used extensively in Indian cooking. Almost everybody knows that it is a powder form of Bengal gram lentils. That is why it is known as gram flour. Bengal gram lentils are also known as chickpeas. There are two types of chickpeas. One is darker – black chickpeas (kala chana) and another one is white chickpeas (kabuli chole). Besan is normally used to make batter for pakoda etc. It is also a popular substitute for wheat flour. Gram flour is also used to make khaman dhokla, thepla, missi roti, cheela etc. Some of those are used as Indian main course meals. Dhokla & cheela are popular Indian breakfast. Gram flour contains significant amount of protein and fiber. It also has various minerals and vitamins. That is why many health conscious people prefer besan made food items.

Makai ka atta in English – Cornflour

Makki ki roti and sarso ka saag are famous winter meals in Punjab and its neighbouring states. Many people love this for dinner too. I also tried it a few times. It is really delicious as well healthy.  Corn is the powder form of whole corn kernels. It is very nutritious. Corn flour is often used as a key ingredient to make a batter. corn flour is also added to make soup or curry thicker. Many people also add corn starch instead of corn flour. But those two are different though both are derived from corn kernels. But corn starch is more white & starchy. It makes gravy thicker than cornflour.

Chane ka atta in English – Chickpea flour

You may think what is the difference between besan and chickpea flour? Both are derived from chickpea flour. Yes, both are almost the same. But besan is a more fine powder and is generally prepared by grinding white chickpea (kabuli chana). Chane ka atta is particularly for flor prepared by grinding black chickpea (kala chana).

Jo ka atta in English –  Barley flour

Jo ka atta is not so common in India. But many people use it to make roti (Indian flatbread). Many people also mix it with wheat flour to make it healthier. Many people love to make pancakes for breakfast. They often use barley flour to make delicious & healthy pancakes every morning. It contains various vitamins and minerals. Did you ever try barley flour to make anything?

Chawal ka atta in English – Rice flour

Nowadays rice flour is easily available in the market. But till a few years ago it is not a common flour in our region. Actually, rice flour is not popular in many regions. Here in Bengal, people mostly use it to make batter for pakoda or bora. I love mooli pakoda, pumpkin flower pakoda etc which are mostly coated with rice flour batter. But for this purpose, we generally to make buy rice flour. Rather we soak rice into the water and then grind to make rice paste. It solves the purpose. But in Southern Indian states, it is a popular flour. In the Konkan region, people use it regularly for their cooking.

Jawar ka atta in English – Sorghum flour

Jawar ka atta or sorghum (millets) flour is popular in those regions where rainfall is very less. You can cultivate sorghum with a minimum water requirement. So it is popular in the Indian state Rajasthan and its neighbouring state. But as it is healthy, so nowadays many people use it as a substitute for wheat flour. Sorghum container high fiber, zero gluten, high protein & minerals. It helps to control body weight. Jawar ka atta is also beneficial for the health of our heart. That is why many health-conscious people love this flour.
