Nowadays some people started eating tofu in India. That is why we see most supermarkets sell tofu. Otherwise, 10-15 years ago it was kind of an unknown word. But now, every food lovers at least heard about this food and some of them definitely have tasted it. But it is still not available at many local shops not just in small-town but also in metro cities. Some people do not understand what tofu is. So people often want to know tofu in Hindi meaning. But unfortunately, there is no specific Hindi word for tofu. Tofu is originated from China. Chinese people are consuming this food item for thousands of years. Not only China but also it is popular in Japan and some South-East Asian countries. So this tofu & Indian people do not have a long history. Till a decade ago, if would ask anybody about this tofu then everybody would be surprised to know such food. But nowadays, some people eat this very often. Many people also know about this food.
So common people give it a local name in Hindi.
As you know it is prepared from soy milk. Soy milk is nothing but the extracts of soaked soybeans. It is very similar to paneer. It looks like paneer. As paneer is nothing but coagulated milk item, similarly tofu is derived from the coagulation of soy milk.
So that is why many people say this as soya paneer or soyabean ka paneer.
