Tadka roti is a popular meal in Bengal. Almost everybody enjoys this at home or roadside restaurant. Normally people understand dal tadka means a spicy lentil-based veg dish which is very popular across the Northern Indian states. But this Bengali style tadka is different because it is not so spicy. Rather it is a complete different dish as compared to North Indian style dal tadka. Surprisingly, scrambled egg (sometimes chicken too) is often added to this Bengali style tadka. Such type of tadka roti are often served at roadside dhaba across the state. It has a desi flavor.
So it is always a special meal when you are having such food at home for dinner. During this lockdown period, such dinner can bring a lot of happiness to every Bengali’s face. A piece of raw onion & green chillies help to complete such meal with desi thaat.
Sometimes meal is more enjoyable due to the ambience. The presence of greenery or open sky & stars, as well as desi char pai, make the ambience more royal than an expensive restaurant.
But such a thing was not always possible when you were at home due to lockdown and cyclone YAAS was knocking the door. So it is better to stay at home. Fortunately, tadka was perfect and enjoyed that with tawa roti.
This tadka usually prepared with either whole moong dal or whole urad dal (biuli). This time I prepared it with whole urad dal.
Rajma beans are a compulsory item to add this type of Bengali style tadka. Though rajam is not so popular lentil/dal in West Bengal and tadka is such a dish that connect Bengali people to rajma. Is this not true?
The recipe of tadka is very simple and anybody can prepare this at home. You just need a few ingredients to make this. This dish is as much as popular in this region that its all spices are being sold in a single packet. You just need to buy one such packet from the local shop and use that to make delicious tadka dal without worrying about all those spices.
