Many people say gardening is very difficult, more importantly, if you are growing vegetables or fruits, then you will need to add different types of fertilizers, so many chemicals & organic inputs. So a newbie can not grow vegetables & fruits at their garden. Many experts also say so many things that make gardeners like us so scared. But gardening is not difficult if we do it simple way. If we use so many things to grow plants and take different care for different plants at the beginning then nobody can start gardening. That is why I do it simple way and still, I am getting enough vegetables from my rooftop gardening in every season. During this winter, I have already started harvesting sheem (hyacinth beans/lablab beans) to make various mouthwatering (sheem curries) dishes.
We just need to apply sufficient compost at the begging of transplanting a plant. When your plant is 4 weeks old then apply mustard cake liquid fertilizer weekly or fortnightly. That is enough for a plant. Many people still add many types of expensive fertilizers but still, they do not get a good result because they either they have used small pot or very less amount of compost at the time of transplanting the plant.
I prefer to use two different types of organic pesticides and apply those alternately. You can prepare a homemade traditional organic pesticide like Dasparni ark, Neemastra, Agniastra, Brahmastra etc. Along with that, you can purchase an organic pesticide like Kaka, Theeta etc. I use a mixture of homemade Dashparni ark & neem oil in one week, next week I use Kaka.
I have total of 6 sheem/sem phali plants and all of those plants have started producing fruits. So today I have harvested sheem for the first time in this season. It is also said that when fresh sheem is available in the market that means winter is knocking the door. I have also harvested sheem from our rooftop garden. So that means it is winter and we should celebrate winter season with a lot of seasonal vegetables & jaggery based dishes.
So here is the list of my favorite sheem based delicious dishes for celebrating the winter season
Shim paturi: It is a popular & traditional Bengali dish. Though most people prefer fish paturi. But shim paturi is also very very delicious, and many people love it during the winter season. As the whole dish is prepared within a banana leaf (leaf means ‘Paata’ in Bengali) that is why it is named as Paturi. Sorse sheem chorchori recipe is also very easy, so anybody can make it at home. In fact, you have to make it at home if you want to taste it because you hardly find it at any restaurant.
Sorse shim: Shim chorchori or sorse shim chorchori is another popular sheem based delicious dish. It is tasty but very easy to make also. you just need to follow a simple recipe to make it at home. In this winter I am growing sheem at our own garden. I have already started harvesting my organic sheem/hyacinth beans/lablab beans/sem phali. So I can expect the taste of such sorse shim chorchori will be more delicious and my meal will be super enjoyable.
Mix veg with sheem: Everybody loves mix veg curry throughout the year. But when you are making such dish in the winter season and you are a sheem lover then you will definitely want to add sheem in your mix veg curry. I tried such mix veg curry with sheem in the last winter season. But this year, I will make regularly with sheem because this year I am producing various other fresh vegetables in my own rooftop garden.
Apart from above mentioned those dishes, there are so many mouthwatering dishes what are prepared with sheem/sem phali/lablab beans/hyacinth beans like fish curry with shim, labra (Bengali style niramish mix veg curry), sheem bothi, sheem aloo bhaja etc. All those recipes are very simple.
