Who does not love to eat piaji in India? I think everybody enjoys this snack a lot. It is very delicious and very enjoyable with evening tea. Now many people would say that what is piyaji? They might think that it is a Bengali snack and they did not eat this earlier. But you will be surprised to know that most Indian people ate this snack several times. Okay, let me clarify that it is nothing but pyaz pakoda or onion fritters. People love to have it when it is crispy & hot. Bengali people also love this snack a lot. So here is the piaji recipe in Bengali style.
You can find a tele bhaja (fried stuff) shop at almost every market area across the Bengal. There will be a crowd in front of such shop. Piyaji is the most popular tele bhaja snack. Though there are various options in tele bhaja like aloo chop, dimer chop, beguni, fuluri, vegetable chop, singara etc. But piyaji is such a kind of tele bhaja that many people often prepare at home to have for the evening snack.

Bengali people also love to eat those piaji with puffed rice (muri). Chatting with friends & family members along with those snacks & tea make the evening very enjoyable. If you are a Bengali then you have definitely enjoyed such moments several times in your life. You do not need to be rich to collects those memories in your life. So there is a significant role of piaji in life, Haha. Is this not true?
When it is such a delicious & popular snack. But that does not mean it is very difficult to make. You need to follow a simple recipe to make piyaji at home. It does not need so many ingredients. You just need to have only three ingredients in your kitchen. That’s it.
Crispy piyaji (piaji) recipe
- ½ cup besan, chickpea flour
- 3 large size onion, Finely chopped
- 3 green chillies, finely chopped
- Salt to taste
- 2.5 tablespoons any refined oil for frying
- Take everything in a large bowl and sprinkle water needed and mix all to make a mixture (not too thick nor thin)
- Now heat oil in a cooking pot and take small amount of mixture and add into the oil
- Fry multiple piyaji at a time as per size of your cooking pot & oil
- Now repeat the same to cook all piyaji
- Fry properly both sides of the piyaji till color turns into dark red
- Now serve those piyaji with hot tea or muri
