What is Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami is celebrated on the Panchami tithi of Shukla paksha of the month of Sravan. On this day Hindu people worship the Snake deity. They believe by worshipping the Nag they will get blessings from the Deity so that their family members will be safe from snake bites. That is why farmers & villagers celebrate this day with their whole family members. They do not touch their plough or any cutting tools on this day. Nobody in the family eat deep-fried or salty food on this day.

Many fairs are organized on this occasion in some regions of the country. Followers chant the Nag Panchami Maha mantra while performing the rituals. In West Bengal, people worship Goddess Mansa as a snake deity.

There are many stories related to snake deity mentioned in Hindu books. Kids often get interested to listen to those stories from the seniors of the family.

Mythological stories on Nag Panchami

According to Hindu mythology, it is said that Kashyap (son of Brahma, the God of creator) and Kadru (Daughter of Prajapati, Vedic Deity) got married and gave birth to the race of Nagas.

In Hindu Mythology, there is an interesting story related to this Nag Panchami. According the story, many many years ago, there was a poor man who was working in the field. The poor man was ploughing in the field. But there were three baby snakes in the field. So the plough cut those baby snakes and they died. Mother of the snake noticed it. Later she entered in the house when the poor man and his family were sleeping. The poor man had a wife, two sons and a daughter. The snake bit all family members except the daughter. So all other members died. The next day snake entered again in the house to bite the daughter. But the daughter offered the snake mother a bowl of milk and ask folded handedly for forgiveness. The snake was satisfied and gave her blessings. The snake mother also returned life of all family members. The snake mother said that on this day if anybody worship the snake deity then he/she will get blessings. They would get protected from snake bites.
