Masala chaas drink, popular North Indian drink

March 31, 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Masala chaas drink is another refreshing summer drink and it is very popular in North India where the temperature reaches 45 degrees during summer days. So it helps people to be hydrated & energetic throughout the day. This is basically a yogurt (curd) based drink prepared with some spices. That is why it is sour & spicy in taste.

So did you ever try masala chaas?

Masala chaas drink and its popularity

I think many of you have definitely tried this awesome refreshing summer drink. It is often served at local restaurant in Northern India along with lunch & dinner. As it is said that it is very helpful for digestion & yogurt keeps your body hydrated, so it is often served along with lunch and dinner. If you ever tried your meal at roadside dhaba (local restaurant) during summer in North India then you have definitely tasted this awesome refreshing yogurt drink.

Well, it will be the wrong statement if I will say that it is only popular in North India. I have also observed in Maharastra people also prefer this yogurt based masala drink. In Bihar & Jharkhand people also love this and enjoy a lot this spicy yogurt drink along with their meal. But when you come to West Bengal then you will see that people do not prefer this hot & salty version of yogurt (curd) based drink rather they prefer sweet lassi instead of spicy & salty chaas.

Masala chaas drink in Delhi

When I was in Delhi, I used to do lunch outside. So often tried a meal from local restaurants & dhaba. First time there I tasted such hot & spicy yogurt based masala chaas drink. In case, they did not have chaas to offer they atleast had various types of raita to offer their customers. Actually, most people prefer yogurt in their daily diet because of climate. So drivers often carry homemade yogurt, salt & spices from home and whenever they find chilled water from somewhere they used to fill a bottle with chilled water and pour all those curd, spices & salt and shake properly to make instant chaas.

I have also tried chaas in Mumbai where I noticed finely chopped green chilies & coriander leaves are added to make this refreshing yogurt drink. Some people even grind green chilies to make such masala chaas which I find very delicious when trying this during having a meal.

Though it is more effective during summer days but people love this healthy & refreshing drink throughout the year.
