How to make upma using sooji / rava – upma recipe

Sooji or rava upma is very popular breakfast item in south & west India. It is a very healthy dish and easy to cook item. People from other corners of the country also prefer this dish too. If you are looking for a tasty and healthy dish for breakfast then you can try this rava upma recipe.

You can have only sooji / rava upma with tea or you may have it with coconut chutney or hot & sour mango chutney.

upma recipe

Generally it is made with onion $ spices but you can add tomatoes too. Different people garnish this dish with different things. Normally it is garnish with coriander leaves and farsan but some people like to spread grated coconut over rava upma too. So you can try what you like. But coriander leaves & farsan/sev are most preferable than grated coconut.

Delicious upma recipe using sooji / rava

Cooking time : 18-20 mintues
Serves : 2-3 people

Ingredients

  • Sooji / rava/ semolina – 100 gm
  • Onion – 1 small size (finely chopped)
  • Tomato – 1 small size (chopped)
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1.5 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1.5 tsp
  • Cashew nuts – 6-7
  • Curry leaves / cadi patta – 5-6
  • Green chilies – 1 pieces (chopped)
  • Coriander leaves – for garnish
  • Oil / ghee – 1 tbsp
  • Water – 1.5 cups
  • Salt – according to taste

Method

  1. Roast rava / sooji for few minutes and let it be light brown colored, then keep it in a bowl
  2. Roast chana dal and urad dal and remove it from pan and keep in a separate bowl
  3. Add oil / ghee in pan and now add mustard & cumin seeds one by one and let those to start cracking
  4. Add finely chopped onion and cook it for 2-3 minutes and now add chopped tomatoes too
  5. Now add chana dal, urad dal and cashew nuts in the frying pan and add salt too
  6. Add curry leaves & chopped green chilies and fry all added ingredients for 1-2 minutes
  7. Now add  water stir well and let water starts boiling
  8. Now reduce heat /flame and add roasted rava/sooji slowly and stir continuously
  9. Once sooji soak all water and then cook for another 1-2 minutes
  10. Switch off flame, garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot

Hot & sour mango chutney recipe

Hot & sour mango chutney is preferable with rava/sooji upma. So you can make this too and enjoy with upma. It is very easy to make and you do not need fire to cook.

Ingredients : Green mango (kachchi keri) – 1 small size, Green chilies – 2-3 pieces, Coriander leaves – 2-3 plants, Hing – 1/2 tsp, Salt according to taste

Method : Cut mango in small pieces and add all other ingredients and then blend all these together in electric mixer grinder properly. Thats it, now it is ready to serve.

Additional tips

⇒ You can use grated ginger and added to other ingredients in step 4 but it is optional. So try it if you like it then add it when next time you will make upma too.

⇒ Spread farsan or sev over upma, some people like it too and it helps in garnishing too

⇒ White looking upma looks good, so some people prefer it and do not allow sooji/rava to change its color at the time of roasting. But you can raost it properly and upma prepared  with properly roasted sooji has different taste. So you can try it too.
