How many of you actually know thatte idli? Did you ever try it? If you are not from Southern Indian states, particularly from Karnataka, then probably you are not aware of this type of idli. Yes, many travellers & foodies know about this food. But common people who live in other parts of the country are not aware of this dish. Is this not true? Even I was not aware of this food. I recently came to know about this type of idlis. I make it at home and discovered these 5 reasons to make thatte idli instead of normal idli.
So what are those 5 reasons? Anybody can guess those?
Before I jump into that, I would say that thatte idli is something that was absolutely new to me. I was just searching for the best idli available across the country.
I searched on the internet and came to know that bibadi thatte idli is very popular in Bangalore, Karnataka. Now I do not have a clue what is Bibadi thatte idli. I searched more on the internet and found that Bibadi is a town located near Bengaluru. Thatte means plate in the Kannada language. That means thatte idli is nothing but a idli which is prepared by using a plate instead of a normal idli mould. So this thatte idli is larger in size.
I was happy to know that what I tried a few months ago at home was nothing but thatte idli. That attempt was not successful because the batter was so thin what led to my attempt totally unsuccessful. I thought that it was not possible to make idli in a plate.
But after knowing this thatte type of ildi, I tried again to make it. I was confident and convinced. So I used a rice cooker to make it. I used the tray/plate that was given to boil dal / lentils in the rice cooker. Fortunately this time, I am successful. The taste was good.

I discovered these 5 reasons to make thatte idli instead of normal idli
Easy to make
It needs the same batter to make this idli. So if you can make simple idli then it is nothing new to you. It is very simple dish for having breakfast or light meal. You can use batter for iinstant idli too. Such batter is normally prepared with semolina (suji/rava), curd/yogurt & baking powder.
One for more
If you make a big size plate then you will get big size thatte idli. Such big size idli can be shared with multiple members. So you do not need to make multiple idlis for this purpose. You just need to choose one big size plate and fill it with batter. So one idli can be enough for many people.
Bigger is better
If you are serving it to your guests then thatte idli can be preferable because bigger is better. Many people prefer bigger size food. People travel a long distance to get bigger size samosas in the city. You have also noticed that many restaurants prepare big size dosa and those looks very special and make their customers happy. That is why I am saying bigger is better.
More in less time
Sometimes people need to prepare idlis in multiple batches because they have many people to serve but less number of idli moulds to prepare idlis. In such case you can choose a big size plates from your kitchen and prepare enough ildis for all. It will help you to make idlis faster.
Flexibility is smarter
Everybody will admit that flexibility is always a smart choice. Here in case you do not have dedicated plates or utensils to make thatte idlis, then nothing to worry because you can find many plates from your kitchen to make such idlis at home. I used a tray/plate what comes with rice cooker for steaming/boiling lentils or vegetables. It helped me to get a big size idli within a few minutes.
