It was a rare kind of Mahalaya what everybody witnessed for the first time in life. This year Durga puja is going to be celebrated after more than a month of the Mahalaya. Not only that this year, everybody witnessing PANDEMIC situation for the first time in our life. Nobody wanted to participate in any social gathering during the Mahalaya. So most people avoided participating in any picnic or food party with friends. So we spent the day with family members and celebrated with this Mahalaya special food menu.
Though it is mid of September. But nowadays it is raining anytime anywhere. Depression is in everywhere from people’s mind to the atmosphere.
So I chose Bengali style khichdi for Mahalaya special food menu. Bengali style khichdi is generally prepared with fried moong dal and govindobhog rice. Did you ever taste it? It is just Ymmmm….
The local fish market is flooded with silver colored hilsha fish. So fried hilsha was there in the menu. Recently thousands of metric ton hilsha fishes were imported from Bangladesh. But it was not from Bangladesh because we already had a Hilsha in our refrigerator.

Though, khichdi & hilsha fry duo create a mouthwatering menu for every Bengali. But that day some other fries were in the list. Those were potato fries and fried papad.
What else a Bengali want? Nothing can be more delicious than Khichdi, fried hilsha, fried potato and papad.
I took a few teaspoons of oil which was used to fry hilsha fish. That makes khichdi more enjoyable.
Everybody used to organize a rooftop picnic at night on the occasion of Mahalaya. In case of outdoor picnic, normally it is organized during the presence of sunlight. But our food menu was prepared for lunch.
