Jhal muri masala! Have you ever heard about it? Nope? But if you are from Bengal then answer is definitely ‘YES’. This wonderful snack is very popular in this region. This is not only popular in West Bengal but also popular in Bangladesh other some parts of neighbouring states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam etc. Jhal muri masala is a perfect mixture of puffed rice (muri), sev, tomato, boiled potato, onion, green chillies and some other Indian spices.
Muri lovers always prefer this smart snack and so it is easily available in this region of West Bengal & Bangladesh and some other parts near its border. Muri itself is very popular food in rural areas of those regions. Not only rural areas but also it is very much popular in urban areas. Many people love to have those with pakoda, telebhaja, samosa, mixed namkeen or grated coconut whereas some people even okay with plain muri. Many people in India prefer this muri with milk as their breakfast food. Some people in Europe & USA also love muri with milk as a breakfast cereal. What is muri?
Muri is basically puffed rice. This is another type of popcorn which made of rice. I mean, the same way it is produced from rice grain as popcorn is produced from corn. Muri is widely used across the Indian subcontinent, particularly in India, Nepal & Bangladesh. It has different names in different places within this area. Though for large-scale production different types of advanced processing techniques involved but traditionally it is produced by heating rice grain with sand inside an oven.

Jhal muri masala in Bengal
Jhal muri masala is not just homemade snack rather it is very easily available street food. you can see a lot of such food vendors are roaming around the city or other places throughout the West Bengal. Children also like this food very much. people who travel by local-train so frequently they certainly have tried this. Many hawkers use to sell jhal muri masala to passengers. Office return passengers like this snack because it is delicious and less oily simple food.
Jhal muri masala recipe
- 3 cup Muri / puffed rice
- 1 onion, medium size, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, medium size, finely chopped
- ½ cucumber, small, julienne cut
- 1 small potato, boiled, chopped
- 3 green chillies, chopped
- 1 tsp Lemon juice
- ½ cup fine sev/ farsan
- 1 full spoon roasted peanuts
- 3 tsp Spices (equal portions of roasted cumin powder, roasted coriander powder, black salt, dry mango powder/aamchur, garam masala, red chilli powder)
- 3 tsp mustard oil
- Cut all vegetables into proper size
- Then mix all ingredients properly
You can have jhal muri with a thin piece of fresh coconut, you can see many street food vendors also add a piece of coconut with this snack
