Almost everybody loves this Indian spinach saag across the country. In Northern Indian state, it is known as palak saag whereas we Bengali people know this as palong shaak. This leafy vegetable is used to make various delicious dishes. It is also easily available across the country and very easy to grow in the Indian climate. Almost every kitchen gardener grow this leafy vegetable in their garden during the winter season. People living in villages grow this leafy vegetable in their backyard. Lastly, nowadays people know that is it also nutritious as experts say so.
Any vegetable is normally popular because it is delicious & easy to grow in that climate. Nutritious value comes value later because people came to know those in last a few decades ago. Before that nobody knows what is there in such vegetables. Not only that, there are so many people who simply do not care whether it is nutritious or not, important is whether that vegetable can be used to make a delicious dish or not. Is this not true? What do you say?
I think there are hardly any food is popular just because those are healthy or nutritious. I also like Indian spinach saag or palak saag or palong shak because of these below mentioned popular dishes. Though there are many other popular dishes in various Indian cuisines. But these are my favorite ones.
Everybody’s favorite palak paneer
This is the most common Indian dish which is prepared with spinach leafy vegetable. Even I came to know that spinach is known as palak in Hindi just because of palak paneer, HaHa. It is very delicious. I often used to have it at various dhaba in Narela, Bawana, Rohini, Alipur, Holambi when I was in Delhi. Butter naan and palak paneer were my favorite meal for years.
I never tried it till I started living in Delhi. If I am not wrong then I tried this Dhaba style dal palak in Sonepat, Haryana. After that, I tried it at several dhaba across the region. I tried the best dal palak at a restaurant in Pitampura, Delhi. It was super delicious and very flavorful. Did you ever try such awesome dal palak?
For Bengalis, spinach saag means palong shaker ghonto, that too with bori. Various types of other seasonal vegetables are added to this dish. That is why it becomes more delicious & healthy too. Almost every Bengali love his dish. It is very very easy to cook dish what is prepared at many Bengali’s kitchens regularly during the winter season.
It is almost the same dish as palak paneer. But here potato (aloo) is added instead of paneer. Many people would say that it is the poor man’s palak paneer. But it has a different flavor and taste. It is also enjoyable. I love to have it with naan or paratha.
Tasty palak pakoda/mixed pakoda
I love pakoda. I think every Indian people love pakoda. they might have different taste. So some people like chicken pakoda whereas some people may love paneer pakoda or veg pakoda. There are also many options in veg pakoda. Among those veg pakodas, palak pakoda & mixed veg pakoda are very popular.
