Mango and watermelon are two wonderful summer fruits. One is famous for its mouthwatering flavor and another one is famous for its juiciness & ofcourse sweetness. I have a 20 years old mango tree at our premise. But I never had watermelon plant. Though it is an annual plant and it does not need enough space but still I never tried to grow watermelon plant because I have never seen anybody in our locality to grow watermelon at own premises.
It is such a plant what you grow vertically by providing support or you can allow it to grow around the ground. So space cannot be an obstacle for growing this plant. You can grow watermelon in containers too. So this year I have decided to grow my own plants and harvest homegrown watermelon fruits.
I decided to grow this plant when I was eating a perfectly ripe & very sweet small size watermelon bought from the local market. So I collect its stores and soak it for overnight and the next day I sowed a dozen seeds in a large plastic bag. I waited for a week and finally, I saw a tiny plant with two leaves came out. Yes, only one plant came out. Within the next 3-4 days, it became 1.5-2 inches long. But one sudden day, the bad weather due to the effect of cyclone Fani damaged that plant. Next day again I sowed more than a dozen seeds. The amazing thing is that this time within 2-3 days I noticed 7-8 tiny plants came out from the ground.

Now I have decided that I will take proper care of those plants and ensure atleast one fruit I will get from this experiment. If I will get one fruit then next year I will definitely grow watermelon plants and harvest dozens of watermelons from my rooftop garden.
Here I will keep all information on my blog in a series of posts (sowing, replanting, fruiting, flowering and harvesting) so that next year I can come again and read this posts to motivate me and avoid mistakes what I am going to do this year.
