Will you be happy if fresh vegetables are available on your rooftop? What if those are available for free? Super happy? But are you thinking that it is impossible? Then you are wrong. Yes, many fresh vegetables & fruits are available there and that too for FREE. Is it not great? Till a few days ago, many people used to come. But nowadays people do not visit due to lockdown. Most importantly you can also build such free & fresh vegetable market on the rooftop. But how can this possible?

Yes, people used to visit till a few days ago. Many vegetables are available there like karela (bitter gourd), kheera (cucumber), borboti (Yard long beans/ snake beans), poi saag (malabar spinach), baingan (brinjal/eggplant), bhindi (okra/lady’s finger), mirch (chillies), kalmi saag (water spinach), kadi patta, pudina (mint), anaar (pomegranate), nimbu (lemon), star-fruits etc. Shocked?

free & fresh vegetable market

Haha! But those are available only for my family. We are the vegetable vendors as well as customers. Actually we grow fresh vegetables & fruits on our rooftop. So till a few days ago, many people used to come here to visit the garden. We get many vegetables from that garden almost every morning.

Here we harvested vegetable changes hands for happiness instead of money. It gives us the opportunity to assemble together every morning as well as evening.

So are you interested to develop your own free & fresh vegetable market? It is free & easy.

I am growing brinjal/eggplants in my rooftop garden. I have only 6 plants what are producing enough brinjal for 3-4 people. I am getting more than 2 kg of brinjal/eggplant every month.

I have 3 bitter gourd (karela) plants. So I am getting almost 10-12 medium size bitter gourd every week.

I have 3 matured cucumber vines. Those plants are producing 4-5 big size cucumber every week. I have planted another 6-7 plants and hopefully, those plants will start producing cucumber after 3-4 weeks. So I will get plenty of fruits from the next week.

I am also growing many local herbs like brahmi, gotu kola (thankuni), tulsi etc. Apart from that I have kalmi saag (water spinach), neem, malabar spinach, pudina plants too.

Cucumber hanging from the trellis. I am actually being my own sabziwala, haha.

Love to see karela on my plants.

Okra/bhindi is a popular summer vegetable. That is why I am also growing 11 plants and those plants are giving me.

Yardlong beans are so popular summer vegetables in West Bengal. Here this vegetable is known as borboti. But in Northern Indian states, people eat its seeds as beans. These beans are known as lobia. I love borboti and make various delicious dishes. That is why I planted these plants. These plants are producing enough yardlong beans. I have also planted the second batch of plants. Those plants will also start producing vegetables very soon.

Chillies are there. It is a common spice and often adds in many Indian dishes. So almost every kitchen gardener grows these plants.
