Ratha Yatra is an important Hindu festival. It is a day when idols of Lord Jagannath, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Balaram starts their journey in chariots from Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple in Puri, Odisha. Here ratha means chariot and yatra mean journey. On this day similar processions are organized by various Hindu devotees across the world. After a week of the day of ratha yatra idols are returned to the temple on the same chariots. This journey is called ulto ratha yatra in West Bengal. Ulto means the opposite. These two days are special for every Hindu devotee as well as foodies. People participate in the procession. They roam in the fair organized due to ratha yatra festival. They have fun and eat many special foods on this occasion. So here is my special dinner on this occasion.Papad bhaja, pakodas, jalebi, khaja, goja etc are very popular dishes on this day. People eat various types of papad & sweets on this day. There are plain dal papad, masala papad, sabudana papad, aloo papad etc. You can notice various roadside food stalls are selling those cooked papads on this day. People also eat a lot of fried stuff like pakodas on this day.
So a week ago, I ate a lot of papad and pakodas. I ate a little extra to celebrate this day. Because this year too no such public procession is organized due to the pandemic situation. People did not participate in the colourful & joyful fair. So people celebrate the day with various homemade foods.
This on the day of ulto rath yatra, I did not have any papad, pakodas etc. Though I wished to have homemade sweets. But that too was cancelled. Finally, I had homemade dosa, aloo masala sabji and sambar dal (without vegetables).
