So are you interested to know various dal in Bengali language? Though dal is popular across the country. But in different regions, different types of dal are popular. Preparation of those dals (lentils) is also different. India is the world’s second-biggest producer of lentils after Canada. In West Bengal, it is also a regular food ingredient and almost every day it is prepared at many Bengali households.
Dal is a popular food item and often used to make various delicious dishes across the country. It is used to make Punjabi style daal makhani, mix veg daal curry, Bengali style dhokar dalna, matar daler bora, famous Rajasthani style daal bati, South Indian sambar.
Various dal in Bengali (Popular Banglar dal)
In Bengal, people mostly prefer split & dehusked lentils. Whole masoor, whole moong, whole matar, whole chana, arhar, whole urad etc are not popular to prepare dal. Whole chana (chhola) is common but that is used to make various curry not dal.
Musur dal
(Split & dehusked brown lentils)
It is masoor dal in Bengali language. Musur dal is the most popular lentils in Bengal. Bengali people prefer thinner lentils curry as compared with Punjabi style masoor daal fry. Musur dal is a regular dish in any Bengali family. Thin musur dal curry & rice along with any fried vegetables are so popular meal.
Fried cumin, bay leaves & chillies are added to boiled musur dal to prepare Bengali style musur dal. Some people also add onion to this dish.

Moog dal
(Split & dehusked mung lentils)
It is moong dal in Bengali language. It is another popular lentils in West Bengal. But it is not a regular dish, rather people cook this on a special occasion or once or twice a week. Moog dal prepared with fish head is very popular Bengali dish. Moog dal is generally chosen to prepare lentils curry in a food menu for a Bengali ceremony.
Matar dal
(Yellow split peas)
Split peas lentils are also popular in Bengal. People often prepare matar dal with seasonal vegetables. Such sabji dal is also popular dish in this region. Do you know garur daal? It is a very special dal curry prepared with various vegetable. It is traditionally on the last day of Bengali month Ashwin and store it to have it in the Kartick month too.
Cholar dal
(Split brown chickpeas)
It is chana dal in Bengali language. Split chickpeas lentils are a preferable dal in Bengal. Cholar dal & luchi is a special breakfast on the weekends. Did you ever try it? It is very delicious and traditional beakfast on any special occasion.
Arhar dal:
(Split pigeon peas)
It is tuar / toor dal in Bengali. It is not so popular dal in Bengal as compared to others. But some people prefer this, so occasionally it is prepared at such households. Do you also belong to such family? Nowadays people acros the country love sambar daal where arhar dal is generally used. So many people prepare it at home to have that with idli, dosa or plain rice.

Biuli dal
(Black gram lentils)
It is urad dal in Bengali. Bengali people also call it as kalai dal. Biuli dal & aloo posto is a popular dish in West Bengal. It is very popular in Bardhaman, Birbhum districts. I also love this meal. Aloo posto or aloo jhinge posto , biulir dal and plain rice are one of my favorites summer meal.
