There are different breakfast meals in India. From North India to South India and from West India to East India, you will always notice diversity in food habits across the country. The diversity in almost every aspect throughout India is its beauty. But still, there are some awesome foods what most Indian like to have for breakfast. So here are the fun breakfast ideas for adults in India. Let’s check whether you find your favorite in this list.
So in case, you are a foreigner or first time you are visiting India then you should definitely try some of these breakfast foods instead of having regular western breakfast food items like corn flakes & milk, breakfast smoothies, pancakes, regular fruit salad or anything else what you use to consume as your regular breakfast meals.
So here is an awesome list of my favorite breakfast meals what most Indians will enjoy in the morning.
Fun breakfast ideas for Indian adults
1. Chole bhature
Very popular North Indian food. Bhature is a deep fried Indian bread whereas chole is a spicy curry of white chickpeas. This chole bhature is often served with sour & sweet onion dipped in vinegar and carrot pickle. Chole bhature with one cup of masala (spicy) tea in the morning make weekend/holidays more enjoyable, haha.
2. Aloo paratha
This is another very delicious North Indian breakfast meal. But it is also popular in the Eastern side as well as Western parts of the country. The morning starts with aloo paratha and mixed pickle or curd/yogurt is always most preferable. This shallow fried Indian bread stuffed with spicy mashed potatoes is really super yummy. When it comes with extra butter on the top of the aloo paratha then it gives heavenly feeling to the foodie.
3. Poori sabzi
Poori is deep fried wheat flour made Indian bread. These pooris are normally served with spicy potato sabzi with curry or dried. Many North Indian people prefer poori sabzi as a fun breakfast. Poori sabzi is very easy to make and you can try different sabzi according to your taste along with poori. In Bengal, people prefer all purpose flour (maida) made poori which is called as loochi/luchi. Bengali people always love to have those loochi with dum aloo during weekends or holidays.
4. Idli sambar
Idli is one of the popular south Indian breakfast meals. But nowadays everybody across the country like this. You can see a lot of food stalls where idli and sambar are selling in India. Idli is best with sambar dal But many people love this with just coconut chutney. I personally enjoy those soft & healthy idlis with coconut chutney instead of sambar dal.
5. Dosa Sambar
Dosa is another mouthwatering and healthy breakfast food which is also popular across the country. The same rice & dal made batter is used to make both idli & dosa. There are a lot of varieties of dosa are available across India in different regions based on their taste. Masala dosa and plain dosa are most common dosa what can be easily available in many regions. But I personally tried different types of dosa for different reasons. Some of those were really incredible and so delicious. Schezwan dosa was one of my favorites. I have tried those schezwan dosa in Andheri, Mumbai. Those were really like out of this world. Very thin & crispy dosa comes with a lot of butter, spices and of-course schezwan sauce. They used to serve that dosa with coconut chutney and a special seasonal chutney like green mangoes during summer.
6. Medu Vada
This is something that I never tried at home because it needs a special medu vada maker. This is one of those fun breakfast ideas what will make your morning more joyful & bright. Did you ever try this? Medu vada is generally served with sambar dal and coconut chutney. As it is difficult to make and it is a deep fried food so it is not as popular as idli & dosa.
7. Poha
Poha is made of flattened rice. I did not know about this breakfast item till I visited Mumbai. Though I have tried flattened rice made pulao but I never tried Maharashtrian poha which is different from chiwda pulao. The first time, I tasted poha in Mumbai which is basically kanda batata poha. Kanda is onion and batata is potato. But I found Malvani poha is much more delicious than any other places in Maharastra. In Malvan, people always add grated coconut and sev/farsan in poha.
8. Misal Pav
Another very special Maharashtrian fun breakfast food is misal pav. Here misal is sprout curry which is served with ladi pav. Farsan/sev, fresh finely chopped onion and tomato are always spread over misal. This is a very special dish and it is also popular in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
9. Sabudana Khichdi
Sabudana khichdi always sound very odd if you do not belong to MP or Maharashtra. It is one of the very special fun breakfast ideas and very famous in Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Maharastra. Many roadside street food corners also offer this sabudana khichdi. Sabudana, boiled potatoes and grated coconut are used to make this awesome breakfast food.
10. Khaman dhokla
Dhokla is always one of my favorite breakfast meals but when I shifted from Kolkata to Delhi then I hardly had khaman dhokla. I never had this food for breakfast because I did not know the recipe and I also did not have time to make that in the morning. But nowadays I can manage time to make khaman dhokla in the morning. That is why now I can enjoy this as a breakfast meal. Khaman dhokla is very popular in Indian state Gujarat.
11. Thepla
Another Gujarati breakfast food. I have never tried to make this at my home but I love this food. I know it is very easy to make, still because no other members in my family do not like this, so I never had a chance to make this. But it is true that thepla became my morning fuel several times. Actually, you can store this in your refrigerator for the longer period. So I used to buy this from a Gujarati shop and store it for 3-4 days. It helped me to save time in the morning and of course I liked those thepla from that shop too.
12. Kachori
From East India to West India and from North India to Central India, kachori is very famous. The morning starts with kachori and masala tea is always very special. There are different types of kachori which are famous in the different regions. Karaisutir kachori is very famous in West Bengal, whereas khasta kachori & masala kachori is popular in Northern Indian states.
