Many people do not need anything with biryani. somebody happy to have biryani with raita. But there are many people who need a side dish for biryani. Particularly if you are having veg biryani then you might need a curry as a side dish. But a side dish becomes essential when you are having pulao. Is it not true? If not a hot & spicy curry then at least a bowl of raita is seriously needed. So here is a list of such side dishes. Which one is the best side dish for biryani and pulao according to your choice?

The best side dish for biryani & pulao

Side dishes for biryani as well as pulao

Matar mushroom : It is a very special vegetarian dish. It goes very well with veg biryani. If you like mushrooms then you will definitely love this awesome curry prepared with a lot of green peas and mushrooms. You can even try it with any kind of pulao too. It is very enjoyable during the winter season when fresh green peas are available. It tastes really good. I love this curry.
Paneer do Pyaza : It looks spicy but actually it is not. It is slightly sweet in taste and prepared with a lot of onions. I love this dish with pulao. It is not as enjoyable with biryani as it is with pulao. It is truly a delicious paneer based dish. If you like paneer based dishes then probably you will like it with both biryani as well as pulao.
Matar paneer : It is another popular North Indian paneer based dish. I love this dish with any kind of pulao. You can have it with veg biryani too. But For me, I need something spicy & hot as a side dish for biryani. For non-veg biryani, I need nothing except raita. What do you think?
Boondi raita: Raita is something that goes well with both biryani and pulao. Boondi raita is the most popular among all other raita. So I think this is the best side dish for biryani and pulao. In fact, most restaurants will serve boondi raita along with biryani & any kind of pulao. Is this not true? If you are biryani lovers and tried several restaurants then also you have definitely noticed this.
Burani raita: I think many people actually never heard about this type of raita. Am I right? So I can not ask people whether they tasted it or not? But I think whoever tried it with biryani would love this. It is a very special kind of raita that is popular in Hyderabad. I tried it there and loved it. After that, I tried it at home multiple times. I enjoyed it again and again with biryani. But nobody at my home liked it, haha. I don’t know WHY?
Vegetarian mutton rogan josh: Many people will jump in just after reading vegetarian mutton? What The …? But yes it is veg mutton. Many Bengali people will get it correctly. Yes, I am talking about unripe jackfruit or green jackfruit. It is consumed as a vegetable and many vegetable sellers call it ‘gachh patha’ or ‘plant mutton’ in Bengal. It is cooked like mutton curry. That is why I am saying this veg mutton rogan josh. It works great with biryani as well as pulao. Try it and comment below.
Chilli paneer gravy : Biryani is always enjoyable when it is served with something hot & spicy. Though chicken biryani or mutton biryani is self-sufficient. I do not need anything else except raita to have my favourite biryani. But I would prefer chilli paneer curry for veg biryani as well as pulao. Do you too?
Mushroom masala with fried potatoes: Are you a mushroom lover? Then stop here. This is one of the best mushroom masala what everybody will enjoy with biryani as well as pulao. This is really good. It goes well with both biryani & pulao. I did not like mushrooms for years. In fact, I would say I hardly tried it in Kolkata. But when I started living in Delhi then I started loving this.

Roasted tomato curry: It is a quick side dish for biryani & pulao. You can make it within a jiffy. The smoky flavor of this curry makes this dish very special. I love this as a side dish for biryani as well as pulao. I tried it several times. But mostly to have with roti/paratha, haha. But it is enjoyable with biryani too. I tried.

Kadai paneer : This is a popular paneer based dish. Almost everybody will enjoy this unless somebody does not like paneer. It is one of my favorite paneer based dishes. I used to have kadai paneer and matar pulao at a roadside dhaba. Those were really enjoyable. But it has been years, I did not try the combination. I hope I will try soon.

I have not mentioned salad in this list because salad is a compulsory item that everybody will serve along with a plate of biryani or pulao. It is a basic side dish that every foodie loves to have. Is it not true?
