Though muri ghonto is the most popular Bengali style ghonto dish. Here muri means fish head. Ghonto means a dry curry. But apart from such non-vegetarian ghonto dish, there are so many other options in ghonto which are for vegetarians. Not only that, there are also some niramish ghonto dishes in Bengali cuisine. Badhakopir ghonto

cabbage curry (dry) or bhadhakopir ghonto is a popular Bengali ghonto. As cabbage (badhakopi in Bengali) is a winter vegetable, so people generally prepare this item during the winter season because fresh cabbage is available in the market during the season. Most people prefer this dish to have with cooked rice, khichdi or luchi. Bhadhakopi & khichdi are a very special bhog what are often offered to God on the occasion of Lakshmi puja, Saraswati puja etc.

Palong shak ghonto

Spinach or palak (in Hindi) or palong (in Bengali) is a popular leafy vegetable across the world. This leafy vegetable is used to make various delicious dishes in different cuisines across the globe. But Indians, particularly Bengali people are true leafy vegetable lovers. They love so many different types of leafy vegetable or saag (in Hindi) or shaak (in Bengali). Palong shak is used to make spinach curry (dry) or palong shak ghonto in Bengali cuisine. Lentils made bori is often used to make such ghonto.

Lau ghonto

Bottle gourd (lau in Bengali) is a popular vegetable. People use it to make various traditional dishes in different Indian cuisines. Such bottle gourd is also used to make Bengali traditional dish lau ghonto or bottle gourd curry (dry). Almost every Bengali love this awesome dish. Daler bori is also added to this ghonto. Mochar ghonto

What is mocha? Do you know? If you are Bengali then you definitely know this and tried several times. Right? It is nothing but banana blossom. Such banana blossom or kolar mocha is used to make mochar ghonto or banana blossom curry (dry). It is very nutritious because it contains various essential minerals. A plate of cooked rice & mochar ghonto are very delicious meal. Many people also add grated coconut to make it more enjoyable or delicious.

pui ghonto ranna

Pui shak ghonto

In Bengali, it is often said that machher raja rui and shaker raja pui (means rohu fish is the king of fish and pui or malabar spinach is the king of all leafy vegetables). I love pui shak ghonto or malabar spinach curry (dry) a lot. In rural Bengali, there is always a malabar spinach plant & banana tree in the backyard. Those are very easy to grow and those plants do not need much care. Even one malabar spinach vine can produce enough pui shaak for a small family.
