How many of you are growing mint (pudina) at your garden? I think some of you are definitely growing mint plants at your backyard or rooftop garden. Mint or pudina is a common leafy vegetable what is used to make various chutney, drinks etc. It is also used to garnish many Indian dishes too. But what are the advantages of homegrown (pudina), particularly during this lockdown period?
Mint (pudina) is a miracle plant and it is used for various purpose. Mint leaves & stems have many medicinal or nutritional values. It is said that mint extracts are beneficial for digestion problems, asthma patients. It is also said that it may cure headache & common cough & cold. Many people use it for oral care too. Mint tea is also used by some people for reducing body weight.
Advantages of homegrown mint/pudina during this strict stay-at-home situation due to pandemic
All-time availability of fresh mint leaves
Sometimes fresh mint leaves are required for garnishing various dishes (pudina chatni, cucumber mint raita). It brings freshness to the dishes. Not only that sometimes we only need its leaves to bring greenish color to the food/drinks. But if mint leaves are not fresh then it would be difficult to separate its leaves from the stem. But during lockdown period we are hardly visiting a vegetable vendor. So if you have grown mint plants in your garden then you are actually blessed.
Make delicious mint-based drinks for minimum cost
Mint leaves are costly and it April month when temperature has already reached 36 degree Celsius. So mint based drinks (mint flavored sattu lemonade, sparkling mint lemonade, cucumber lemon mint water, gotu kola mint juice etc) are always beneficial. It keeps our body hydrated & helps us to beat the summer. You may find some fun in summer days when you are staying at home.
Prepare pesticide for your garden
Many gardeners did not plan this lockdown period. So they did not store adequate fertilizers, pesticides etc. Such a situation you have to prepare pesticide from all those items which are available at your home. Even I did not stock any pesticide for this lockdown period. So I am using homemade organic pesticides prepared with various plant based items like mint leaves, garlic, ginger, neem leaves, turmeric etc.
Prepare homemade deodorant
Mint leaves can be useful to make homemade deodorant. So in case, you do not have deodorant at home and you still want to avoid visiting a local market then you can make it at home if you have mint (pudina) plant at your garden. You just need to boil neem leaves, mint leaves, any flavoring leaves (lemongrass, lavender etc) and strain it then add aloe vera gel and mix all properly, store it in an empty sprayer bottle and use it.
